Bursitis is a condition where the small fluid-filled sacs (Bursae) are inflamed. These Bursas provides cushions for the bones, tendons and muscles around the joints. The most common locations for bursitis are in the shoulder, elbow and hip but it can also occur around your knee, heel and base of your big toe.

Causes

Bursitis usually occurs around the joints that performs frequent repetitive movements. As such, due to walking or prolong activities on the foot may increase the risk of bursitis around the heel. Bursitis can also develop through trauma on affected area, inflammatory arthritis. In addition, the tendency of developing bursitis increases with age and presence of other medical conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, gout and diabetes.

Symptoms

  • Aches and stiffness around joint
  • Intense pain when applied pressure
  • Swollen and red

More severe symptoms:

  • Disabling joint pain
  • Inability to move the joint
  • Excessive swelling, redness, bruising or a rash in the affected area
  • Share or shooting pain, especially during exercise
  • Fever

Treatment

Bursitis generally gets better over time; however conservative treatments are able to relieve discomfort and shorten recovery duration. Some common conservative treatments include RICE (Rest, ice, compression and elevation). You may also consider medication for the infection, typically your doctor might prescribe an antibiotic.

If conservative treatments don’t work, you might require additional treatments that includes corticosteroid injections, physical therapy, or in some cases surgery.

Prevention

There are many ways to prevent bursitis. Some simple ways are to use cushion paddings on joints that may be expose to high pressures (e.g. Heel), maintaining a healthy weight to prevent applying too much stress on the joints, and lastly regular exercises can strength muscles to protect the joints.
