Bunion is a bone growth on the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint caused by the pushing of the big toe against the next toe.

Causes

Most bunions are developed due to the type of footwear worn (e.g. pointed heels, pumps and tight-fitting shoes) causing the toes to adopt the shape of the shoes. Alternatively, pronating of the feet can also cause the big toe to withstand some weight during standing and walking hence developing bunion.

Symptoms

It may be difficult to identify bunion during the mild stages however there are still some signs to look out for.

  • For mild stage: You will notice slight tilt (20 to 30 degrees) of the big toe and little bony enlargement on the first MTP joint.
  • For moderate and large stages: You will notice tilt (30 to 50 degrees) of the big toe and large bony enlargement on the first MTP joint.
  • For severe stages: You will notice tilt (50< degrees) of the big toe, large bony enlargement on the first MTP joint and may notice the second toe overlapping the big toe (Hammertoe).

Treatment

Totreat bunion, surgery is the only method that totally removes the bunion and straightens the big toe. However, it takes up to 9 months for full recovery and mobility. More importantly, there is no guarantee for recurrence.

Other more conservative method to treat bunions require the use of several products (Hallux Valgus Night Splint, Bunion Bootie, and Gel Bunion Cushion with Toe Spreader). With the use of these products, improvements on the big toe can be observed within 4-6 months of use. Exercises should be incorporated with the use of the aforementioned products, as it keeps the ligaments and muscles flexible for adjustments.

Prevention

For big toes that are tilted less than 20 degrees, it is recommended to wear suitable products (Bunion Bootie) to prevent growth of bunions. For bunions due to feet pronation, it is recommended to wear orthotics insole and footwear. In addition, refrain from wearing tight-fitting and pointed shoes.
